Time for a quick bike-rider safety checkup
Balance, stopping, steering a bicycle are easy.
Traffic rules? Who needs 'em? Not me!
Away we go.
Do you ride like this?
We suggest that you click here and take this fun quiz from the MTQ.
Click here for Quebec's Bicycle Safety Guide (4th ed.). It's a pdf and you'll be surprised how much normal cycling activity is illegal. And expensive. Demerit points too, ouch!
Here is a searchable version of the Quebec traffic code in english. Select the traffic code from the search results. When the traffic code appears, use the search button on the right side of the screen, it works great and is highly educational.

I've always been curious about demerit points. What if you don't have a driver's licence?
Ontario was "outed" recently for issuing people drivers licenses without their (i,e, the citizen's) knowledge, presumably for situations like this when someone doesn't have a drivers license, but they need to have an official record.
What on earth does "drinking alcohol while riding" mean? Does it mean having a beer in one hand on yer bike, or having consumed alcohol? In that case, wouldn't the same legal limit apply as to a car or motorcycle driver? You can usually have a beer or glass of wine and not be over the legal limit.
It is extremely vague wording.
One thing that is infuriating is the requirement to use bicycle paths, when some are extremely ill-designed and unsafe in spots.
Penalty fees are higher now. Last year I paid 37$ for a red light. I think it's 52$ this year. Even if you don't have your drivers' license you will lost your points for 2 years and it will appear in your files for the next 5 years. If you have your license during this period you will start with fewer points and insurance company will know that you lost points before.
