a trip across the Plateau - ten near accidents

We took a trip across the plateau last night to get some Coco-Rico chicken.

On the way there and back we had ten near-collisions from people doing all sorts of crazy bad driving.

What is special about that?

Everyone of those bad drivers was a CYCLIST!

We had:
people riding the wrong side of the bike path
people riding the wrong side of the street
people riding the wrong way on the one way street (multiples)
people sailing through their red lights into our green lights (multiples)
people sailing through stop signs onto the street we were on, into us (multiples)

OK, we simply want to know, "What is wrong with the people in this city?"

Seriously, we want to know, how much lack of self preservation do all these people have? When I screamed look out at one particularly close call, the woman blithely said "Voyons," like she hadn't run a stop sign into aturn without looking if anyone was coming and she almost killed us! But to her, it was like "What's our problem?"

So we really want to know... "What is wrong with the people in this city?" There is a serious lack of responsibility going here.

Most bikers I know are very very cautious when breaking the rules like passing on a red light. We do know that pedestrians have the right of way. However, cars don't seem to know it. It is an exception when a pedestrian gets killed by a bike. Yet you complain when we break a few rules to ensure OUR own safety. It's like saying - drive on the road with cars that don't respect your rights and vulnerability. Just die you bikers! Why don't you mention all the times you nearly got killed by a car...oh wait, YOU are much more careful to keep away from cars.

Pedestrians get no respect from bikers! Bikers get no respect from cars! Who's in the most danger? Bikers who break rules are just responding to and avoiding aggression from car/taxi/bus/truck drivers. It's a matter of self defense. But you pedestrians really don't have much to worry about...except from cars.

Someone who runs stop signs without looking is NOT ensuring anyone's safety or an act of self-defence, it's an idiot on a bike, pure and simple. I am glad you are not one of these idiots, but you have to be blind to not to notice they exist in large numbers in this city.

I at least know the difference between right vs wrong, and I hope you do too. But you use a few too many rationalizations for bad behaviour to make me be real comfortable that that's a fact.

Ride safe! (If it's not too inconvenient for you)
